head in the books

(no subject)

I finished reading the first volume of The Book of the New Sun. I guess I'm the sort of reader who puts up with a book that carries in its orbit a lexicon. Not that you really need it. The first book is fun enough in its own way, but the Appendix with Wolfe's "Note on the Translation" is thrilling in its implications. No spoilers here but "artifacts surviving so many centuries of futurity." [!!!] Also - "the importation of extrasolar breeding stock." Woah.

The first book has no compelling villain and the characters are mostly dull, but the world is so strange you have to keep going.

So I keep going.
